THE BEACH
|
|
Agios Georgios Bay with its the long sweeping sands is often suggested by travel brochures and web-sites to be arguably the best beach in all Corfu.
Most years it is awarded the Blue Flag(opens pop-up window) for its cleanliness and facilities.
Several lifeguard stations and beach showers are present.
The extreme southern part of the beach is rather narrow and mostly avoided by tourists in favour of the central and northern parts but the sand here is firmer, (ideal for sand-castles).
The long beach is wide enough to give ample space for sunbathers and is a delightful place to spend a few lazy hours under a beach umbrella with the occasional plunge into the clear water to cool off. Mostly the beach is safe for children and non-swimmers. However in places, which vary according to recent weather conditions, the beach at the sea edge does shelve rather quickly with soft sand making exit from the water difficult so young children should be accompanied by an adult in those areas. Also after storms or strong winds the sand sometimes moves along the beach exposing a ridge of pebbles in places.
Spread at intervals along the whole beach are numerous beach umbrella and sun bed enterprises, who are also responsible for emptying the rubbish bins on their "patch of beach". These large blue bins are placed about every 30 metres and so there is no excuse for untidy visitors to drop their rubbish.
In peak season there are some excellent water sports available including:

Many of these are available from the family-owned Sunfun Club.
At the extreme northern end of the beach guided Scuba Diving , with Angelo and Vassilis, with lessons for beginners, opens up the underwater world .
Along the beach road are numerous friendly Tavernas, restaurants, and a few general shops.
