SCENERY and COUNTRYSIDE
|
|
The cliffs of the rocky headlands which flank Agios Georgios Bay provide a wonderful setting for this quiet resort.
From the high ground on either side the views of the sweeping golden sands and turquoise waters of the sea are worth everyone's time and effort to see.
The countryside around Agios Georgios is wonderfully varied and the following photo gallery illustrates many different views all within reach of ramblers.
The northern headland, with the depression of the ancient Porto Timoni near its point, is comparatively narrow and has the village of Afionas perched astride it. The views from here in both directions are fantastic.
To the south the bay is shielded by more high cliffs beyond which is the beautiful popular resort of Paleaokastritsa (not visible). A beach visitor with a keen eye can pick out a diagonal line slanting up these cliffs. This is an ancient donkey trail which is the subject of one of the walks described elsewhere.
Behind the beach the countryside is more gentle with wooded valleys and surrounding hills covered in ancient olive groves interspersed with many tall green cypress trees . The richest agricultural land lies in a flat valley with a small stream at its centre. Here there are a number of small farms with tiny fields growing vegetables, citrus fruits, soft fruit, hay etc.
Along the bottom of the valley the brighter green foliage of deciduous trees and shrubs is welcome on a hot Corfu day.
The valley winds its way inland until it meets the high ridge which divides the northern part of the island. The narrow road to Corfu town follows the contours of the valley's southern flank twisting amongst the olive trees. Some tortuous bends make this a memorable scenic drive but cause much steering-wheel effort by the local coach drivers.
