WARNINGThe "Donut man"Several lengthy topics have appeared on Corfu Message Boards over the last few years about a man who sells fruit and doughnuts etc on beaches and he is known as "The Donut man". There are many complaints about him, the main ones being that he charges outrageous prices, often to children, and tries to take advantage of foreign tourists by cheating them on their change. He seems to operate along beaches of every resort in northern Corfu and is regularly seen on the busier beaches of Acharavi, Sidari, Arillas and Agios Stefanos. He was seen on Agios Georgios beach as recent as May 2009.
It is suggested that if approached you say a firm "NO" and stick to it. He is sometimes accompanied by a child. One other word of warning ! He has been observed as having very dirty unhygenic habits and then immediately handling the goods. Therefore if you or your family are still tempted to buy his goods, don't let the children do it, then make sure you ASK THE PRICE FIRST and try to find the EXACT MONEY. If not, be sure to point out to him the value of the note you are offering and carefully CHECK YOUR CHANGE before you move away. Then ALWAYS WASH THE FRUIT before eating it. If you have been cheated or over-charged then complain to your hotel / accommodation owner telling him it will bring the resort a bad name. You might also complain to the owner of the sun-bed concession you use who most likely is already aware of this guy. One sun-bed owner has warned him he will complain to the Mayor and Tourist Police if he receives any more complaints from his customers. |
